Asperger Syndrome Medication
Today any treatment programs goal for Asperger’s syndrome will be to improve your child’s abilities to interact to function effectively in their day to day routines. Because there is no specific Asperger syndrome medication treatment, some children will not be on medication at all. In some cases physicians will treat other specific target symptoms that might accompany a child with Asperger’s syndrome. These are some of the other specific accompanying symptoms children that have Asperger’s syndrome may also have and their medical treatments.
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD is one of the other target symptoms a child with A.S. may exhibit. This is a condition where a child has trouble paying attention and focusing on tasks. They tend to act without thinking, and often have trouble sitting still. The ADHD or Asperger syndrome medication most often used today are stimulants. There will be often quick and dramatic improvements in behavior. Other types of medicines that may be used to treat ADHD as an Asperger syndrome medication would be: Strattera, which is a non-stimulant, some anti-hypertensive, or possibly an antidepressant bupropion if needed.
A child needing additional Asperger syndrome medication might exhibit signs of bipolar disease. These children or teens can have mood swings that are accompanied with extreme ups and downs. When their mood is up, they can have short, intense outbursts or feel grumpy and irritable several times almost every day. When their mood is down, they feel depressed and saddened. Doctors will usually treat these symptoms with a Bipolar or Asperger syndrome medication treatment using mood stabilizers, antipsychotic drugs and or SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors). With any drug the doctor must carefully monitor the child’s progress.
Obsessive-compulsive disorder or OCD, social anxiety disorder, and depression can also be a target symptom for children with A.S. and need additional Asperger syndrome medication. These conditions often place heavy demands on parents. Particularly as they are already dealing with a child with extra needs. These conditions usually do need treatment with their own set of medicines and other therapies. For instance, depression is usually treated with an antidepressant medication, OCD will also be treated with antidepressants call SSRIs, and social anxiety disorders will be treated with therapy first then the use of antidepressants as an Asperger syndrome medication for the target symptoms.
One thing to remember as your child is being treated with any Asperger syndrome medication is that all drugs should be used only as directed by your doctor. In taking these medications some children suffer side effects. Some of these side affects might be: aggressive behavior, agitation, restlessness, chattiness, higher activity level, irritability, panic attacks, sleep problems, or behavior changes. Any signs of these would need to be reported to your doctor right away.
