What Causes Asperger Syndrome?

Parents of children diagnosed with Asperger syndrome and even those diagnosed with A.S. might wonder where this disorder came from. They might wonder what causes Asperger syndrome. Some might even wonder if Asperger syndrome is genetically disposed.

The answers for the question, “what causes asperger syndrome” is still being discovered today. There has been evidence for years now that show there is possibly a link between genetics and Asperger syndrome. This presumption is because of its tendency to run in families. Right now research into what causes asperger syndrome shows that there are most likely a group of genes whose variations make someone vulnerable to developing AS. Scientists believe that different variations of these gene combinations can cause Asperger syndrome to be mild or severe, depending on what combination each individual inherits.

Scientists also say that some research shows that AS patients may also exhibit other mental health disorders such as depression and bipolar disorder. These disorders are sometimes called side specific problems that are correlated with the A.S. disorder. Despite the side problems, people are still known to have Aspergers syndrome. If any medications are usually needed in an A.S. patient, the medications would be used to treat these side specific problems, not for what causes Asperger syndrome. Researchers are also looking into whether the cause might inhabit some environmental factors. Particularly, those that might that might produce a change in brain development and as such play a role in what causes Asperger syndrome.

When someone first learns about Asperger disorder they often make wrong assumptions. These assumptions can be about the people with the A.S. disorder as well as wrong assumptions on what causes the Asperger Syndrome disorder or what it does. Often an A.S. child is thought to have been brought up poorly, due what others believe is inappropriate behavior in social settings.

This could not be any further from the truth. A.S. children do try to fit in socially, but because of what causes Asperger syndrome they usually have an inability to read body and face language, and as such they are thought of as “rude” or insensitive to others. This problem does not have anything to do with parenting style. Another assumption that used to prevail up until the 1970’s was that the mother caused it by being a cold and distant to their child. This was often referred to as “refrigerator mother”. This assumption too, is false and not based on any science.

So far there is no definitive, specific item that shows what causes Asperger syndrome. The science evidence tends to believe it is from changes at the cellular level that alters the brain and subsequently the thought processes. Research is being done daily to find answers.
